Medical Physics
Department of Medical Physics
Medical Physics is an applied branch of physics devoted to the application of concepts and methods of physics to medicine/healthcare. The field of Medical physics emerged with the discovery of Radioactivity and X-rays in 1890's. Since then, the use of radiation in healthcare and other industries has been wondrously growing and so has the scope of Medical Physics.
In India, Qualified Medical Physicists are employed in Radiotherapy, Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine departments of Healthcare centers and upon getting an exclusive certification, they are employed in Industries as well. The scope of Medical Physics in abroad is not only limited to the above mentioned departments, it is still wider.
A Medical Physicist's service to the hospitals comprises of involvement and advice on selection, acceptance and commissioning, QA,QC and optimized use of Radiation generating equipments. With the advent of precise and cutting-edge technologies, a Clinical Physicist's role in a Radiotherapy department is pivotal and indispensable. Their contribution towards the maintenance and improvement of quality and safety of the patient-oriented services are primal. Radiation Safety of the departments dealing with radiation are ascertained and controlled by a Medical Physicist qualified as an RSO.
Medical Physics course conducted at Dr.NGP Arts and Science College is run in collaboration with the departments of Radiotherapy, Radiology and Nuclear Medicine of Kovai Medical Center and Hospital, Coimbatore. The main focus of the course is preparing students for a career as a Clinical Medical Physicist. Radiotherapy department of the hospital is equipped with the state-of-the art technology including the likes of Linear Accelerator and High Dose Rate Brachytherapy. It is complemented with equipments like CT, MRI, X-rays, Ultrasound, Mammography, Cath-lab, PET-CT, SPECT-CT, High Dose Radio-Iodine therapy that are available in other departments as well.
Objective
"Visualizing solutions for accurate diagnosis and treatment"
The Department was established during the year of 2012. This is a basic science department in Dr.N.G.P Arts and Science College. The faculty provides comprehensive graduate education in medical physics, and the research strives to improve health by developing and implementing radiation treatment for cancer.
Vision
"To offer diverse Medical Physics programme to establish and maintain the standards of the students of Medical Physics in the disciplines of Diagnostic Imaging, Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine.
Mission
The goal of the Department is to cultivate an educational environment which provides the full spectrum of learning opportunities in clinical medical physics, radiation oncology and radiobiology. The curriculum is flexible and designed to enable a student to optimize their learning experience throughout their two years programme. It is an expectation that upon the completion of the programme a student will be an outstanding "Radiation Oncology Physicist" capable of making an immediate impact in either an academic or community practice setting.
