The Dr.N.G.P. Arts and Science College offers Post graduate program in Medical Physics since 2012, in collaboration with Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH). The Medical Physics Program has been approved by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Body (AERB), Mumbai and affiliated to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore.
Medical Physics is the application of physics to medicine. It uses physics concepts and procedures in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of human diseases like cancer. Medical Physics plays a vital role in medicine, biological and medical research, and in the optimization of certain health related activities. Medical Physics includes areas such as Diagnostic Radiology Physics, Nuclear Medicine Physics, Radiotherapy Physics and Radiation Protection.
The aim of the Medical Physics program is to prepare students to become clinical medical physicists in radiotherapy or imaging physics, or to pursue careers in research and teaching in medical physics, resident physicians, and radiology and radiation therapy technology students. The scope of duties of medical physicists covers a wide array of activities in modern hospitals where radiation technology is used. As part of a team of health professionals, medical physicists play a significant role in assuring the safe and effective use of radiation in medicine.
The Medical Physics program consists of Lectures, Laboratory Sessions, Conferences, Industrial Visits, Clinical Observation and Training, and a 45-day Research Project at well equipped cancer hospitals across India. The program's comprehensive syllabus covers various topics, including Radiation Physics, Anatomy and Physiology, Radiological Physics, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Dosimetry, Radiation Biology, and Radiation Safety.
