Department of Microbiology

Overview

The department of Microbiology was established in the year 2003 with the postgraduate programme and in 2004 with the undergraduate course. The research programme comprises M.Phil and Ph.D which was started in the year 2005 and 2007 respectively.

The department has a strong link with the Kovai Medical Center and Hospital and other institutions of the trust where there are a number of ongoing research projects. The department is armed with well qualified, dedicated and experienced faculty members.

The department is committed towards the healthy academic (curriculum and co-curriculum) growth of the students as well as fostering the teaching and research activities of the faculty.

The Department engages in various Projects supported by DBT, ICMR, UGC, DST, DRDO, CSIR, and TNSCST.

Programme educational objectives

The Curriculum is designed to attain the following learning goals which students shall accomplish by the time of their graduation:

  • To inculcate practical knowledge in correlation with the theoretical knowledge.
  • To equip the students to meet the requirements of the current technology in Microbiology.
  • To motivate and train the students in various clinical and industrial sectors.
  • To encourage students to involve in research to explore microorganisms for the betterment of mankind.

P03 To appreciate the complexities of microbiological processes for industrial and other purposes, especially the genetic manipulation of microorganisms for the production of antibiotics, hormones, etc.
P04 To inculcate broad education necessary to understand the impact of microbiological solutions in a global and societal context; an ability to function in multi-disciplinary teams; To develop the ability to identify, formulate, and solve biological problems and to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.
P05 To create awareness of contemporary issue and to appreciate the applications of Microbiology to become an entrepreneur.
