Department of English

Overview

In the present milieu, English language is inevitable in every sector; in accomplishing the prerequisites of language competency the department of English enables various viable practices. Besides, students have a flair for literature, to quench their thirst and simultaneously it helps them build their career in convergent avenues. The B.A. with CA was started in 2011 consequently M.A. in 2014. Furthermore, research programmes have been offered since 2016. The department makes room for students to hone their language skills and literature knowledge on par with national and international standard.

This course is:
  • To make the students fluent users of the English language.
  • To offer exposure to literary/cultural traditions that expands their horizon of imagination.
  • To widen the literary discourses and accommodates more contemporary interests.
  • To pave way for creative writing to excel in freelancing.
  • To enable the students to equip with the latest technology oriented curriculum.

B. A. English Literature

PROGRAMME EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

The Curriculum is designed to attain the following learning goals which students shall accomplish by the time of their graduation

  • To enhance a broad awareness and perception of historical and cultural context in English Literature and Languages
  • To acquire various major philosophical and cultural issues emphasized in Literature
  • To familiarize different genres of literature and its approaches with intensity and sagacity
  • To augment fluency in written and oral communication for academic purposes
  • To cultivate an interest in interdisciplinary research and analysis

On the successful completion of the program, the following are the expected outcomes:

M. A. English Literature

PROGRAMME EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

The Curriculum is designed to achieve the following learning goals which students shall accomplish by the time of their graduation:

  • To contextualize and judge wide range of popular literary works
  • To procure the course knowledge by analysing the critical theories and methodologies in Literature
  • To identify language as a human trait, that includes socio-linguistic aspects in language teaching
  • To develop analytical knowledge and skills of a specialized field through their scholarly research
  • To attain advanced professionalization and pedagogical goals that paves way for distinctive Careers

Bridge Course

English Department has taken on a pilot project conduct Bridge Course to train students of different levels of competence and skills. It gives adequate exposure to English for rural and semi-urban students. Bridge course was conducted in the beginning of the academic year.

Remedial Course

Remedial Course is conducted every semester soon after the University exam results. It is very effective in finding the right triggers which will ensure the slow learners to meet their goals.

BEC

The Business English Certificate Course is offered by the University of Cambridge UK. Cambridge English: Business Certificates are trusted and globally accepted by leading employers, educational institutions and governments worldwide. This certificate helps one to achieve ones ambitions to:

  • Work abroad
  • Work with international organizations in one's own country
  • Study business-related subjects taught in English.

The training for this course is provided by the Department of English to the students of all disciplines. The training programme commenced in the month of September 2012. Students were trained with the help of various teaching aids and also they were made to take up many Mock Tests prior to the exam.
